The A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Up/Down is the latest model, but this is not the 1st version of watch. The original was produced from 1995 to 2007. The “1815” in the model name is the year of birth of the company founder Ferdinand A. Lange. Considering the 1815 Up/Down is known as a quintessentially modern Lange, this reference is apt as it incorporates traditional aspects of the brand’s pocket watches. Lange timepieces have offered power reserve indicators since Lange patented an early version in 1879.
The aesthetic of the 1815 Up/Down is pure Lange. Just one look at the dial will tell those who know you’re wearing something special. But the exterior is designed to inform, not impress. Prominent Arabic numerals and railway track minute scales, together with blued-steel hands extending to the relevant track, ensure excellent legibility during the day. This watch is suitable as a dress watch and does not offer luminous material.
